The Draft Guidance Notes on Control of Pesticides in TMHS was borne out of ATSC’s acknowledgment of the importance of setting maximum limits of pesticides residues in traditional medicine and health supplements.

The  Guidance on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) is to use an ASEAN harmonized approach to minimise the risk of TSE in TMHS.

The Draft Guidelines onTMHS on Contaminants has been developed by taking into consideration the safety requirements of Traditional Medicine (TM) / Health Supplements (HS).

The Committee has agreed that the analysis of the product is not restricted to those tests named in these guidelines, but acknowledges the importance of other tests, such as identification of active ingredients, screening of adulteration with schedule poisons or chemical compounds and so forth.

There is a possiblity that the Committee might in the future decide to include other tests if necessary, to ensure the safety and quality of TM/HS depending on the capacities and capabilities of member states.

These guidelines for TM and HS contaminants form an element of the ASEAN Common Technical Requirements (ACTR).
