The Guiding Principles for the use of additives and excipients in TMHS covers restricted and prohibited additives and excipients in TMHS. The criteria for determining whether or not an additive or excipient maybe used in TMHS are as follows:

  • The use of additives and excipients must be justified
  • Additives and excipients must not pose hazards or unacceptable risks to consumers’ health
  • Additives and excipients should be of appropriate food or pharmaceutical grade quality and should at all times conform with the applicable specifications of identity and purity recommended by Codex Alimentarius or the official pharmacopoeias or, in the absence of such specifications, with appropriate specifications developed by responsible national or international bodies
  • Additives and excipients must not be included in the list prohibited additives or excipients.
